Automotive News’ 100th anniversary edition looks back at the industry’s growth through periods of innovation, disruption, and reinvention. Technological advancements and global demand have shaped the automotive sector, with Georgia not only navigating the evolution but also setting the pace for tomorrow’s mobility solutions.

Manufacturing made Georgia a reliable production and logistics hub. Decades of supplier growth, infrastructure investment, and global engagement have expanded this ecosystem across the region:

  • Early roots (1909-1920s): White Star Automobile in Atlanta and Savannah Blowpipe (now Great Dane) launched Georgia’s automotive presence.
  • Foundational growth: Blue Bird Corporation (1927) and Genuine Parts Company (1928) were established; Ford and General Motors invested by 1947.
  • Legacy sites repurposed: The former GM plant in Doraville became Assembly Studios, and Ford Hapeville transformed into the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta.
  • 21st-century expansion: Kia Georgia (2006) and suppliers have created over 14,000 jobs; Pirelli, Novelis, Honda Precision Parts, Kumho Tire USA, Toyo Tire, Cox Automotive, Porsche, Toyota Industries Corporation, and Mercedes-Benz expanded their Georgia operations.
  • EV and advanced tech focus: Recent investments include hybrid and electric vehicles, DC-to-DC production, e-mobility innovation corridors (The Ray, Curiosity Lab), and the $12.6 billion Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America.

Georgia’s dedication to commitment and adaptability is delivering long-term success in automotive manufacturing. These investments and job gains demonstrate Georgia’s continued emergence as a global hub, showing how the region’s history connects to its dynamic present in innovation and mobility.

  • Strong partnerships fuel performance: GDEcD connects automakers with communities, utilities, education partners, and other industry leaders, accelerating long-term growth of integrated supply chains in the state’s stable, business-friendly environment.
  • Workforce is the engine: Georgia Quick Start and the Technical College System of Georgia provide customized training for rapid, efficient scaling.
  • Flexibility drives capability: Facilities like Kia Georgia and Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America roll out a mix of traditional electric, and hybrid vehicles – backed by a robust supplier network keeping any engine type running.
  • Site readiness sets the pace: Programs like Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development (GRAD) and the Rural Site Development Initiative ensure industrial sites are prepped and primed, putting Georgia in pole position for major projects like Hyundai’s $12.6 billion Metaplant.
  • Forward-looking strategy: Georgia continuously aligns with evolving automotive trends, supporting innovation, growth, and global investment.
  • Community benefits: Investments spark job creation, charge educational partnerships, drive infrastructure growth and cross-cultural exchange, and shift local economies into high gear.
