Global Commerce Celebrates a Banner Year in FY19

The Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Global Commerce division works hard to create jobs and investment opportunities in every community in Georgia. Projects include new company locations, existing industry expansions and growing small businesses. This dynamic team includes statewide and existing industry project teams, a small business team, and international representatives in strategic markets around the world. 

Below you will find a snapshot of some of the highlights from FY19 (July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019).

FY19 State Snapshot:

  • The Global Commerce division supported the creation of 28,960 new jobs that generated more than $7.4 billion in investment through the location of 332 projects. 
  • Of the 322 projects located – 103 of them were new companies to Georgia. These new locations created 15,686 jobs and generated $3.8 billion in investment. 
  • Businesses already located in Georgia made up 229 of the projects located. These existing industry expansions created 13,274 new jobs and invested $3.7 billion. 
  • Seventy-four percent of the total economic development announcements were outside of the Atlanta area.
  • The majority of project locations were in the Manufacturing sector and accounted for 42% with Logistics/Distribution Centers coming in second at 14%.
  • Industries with significant job growth in FY19 include Headquarters, FinTech, Health IT and Manufacturing.
  • Sixty-eight international projects (foreign direct investment) created 6,118 jobs and generated $3.3 billion in investment. Top countries by jobs and investment are South Korea, Germany, Japan and Canada.
  • Thirteen South Korean projects represent the most jobs created as well as the highest investment percentage from a single country. In fact, SK innovation, a developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for hybrid electric vehicles, announced they would be creating 2,000 jobs and investing $1.67 billion in Jackson County – the largest project in Georgia’s history.
  • Global Commerce’s Entrepreneur and Small Business team connected with more than 1,600 individuals through presentations, outreach and one-on-one meetings.
