From pain points to progress, the Logistics Roundtable at the 2026 Georgia Logistics Summit brought together Georgia’s leaders in multimodal transportation to discuss what’s working and what’s ahead.

At the table: Leaders from Georgia Ports Authority, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Norfolk Southern, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Savannah Airport Commission, and the Georgia Motor Trucking Association shared a look at the big picture and what it means for businesses across the state.

What we heard
Georgia’s infrastructure network is among the best in the nation – here’s what leaders are watching.

  • Data is driving decisions
From railroads using AI-powered inspection portals to monitor track conditions in real time to GDOT expanding broadband and intelligent transportation systems statewide, better data is enabling faster, more informed decision-making. Plus, the ability to share information across partners is becoming just as important as the infrastructure itself.
  • Technology is transforming the network
From advanced driver safety monitoring and training tools in trucking to app-based coordination at intermodal terminals, innovation is happening now. In aviation, planning is underway for advanced air mobility, including the integration of drones and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
  • Investment is critical – and working
Panelists highlighted billions invested in roads, ports, and connectivity across Georgia, alongside projects like the new inland port in Gainesville, that are enabling capacity expansions and positioning the state for long-term growth. They cited significant state investment, particularly under Governor Brian Kemp’s leadership, as critical to advancing major projects and offsetting rising infrastructure costs.
  • Congestion and capacity challenges
Unpredictable traffic, limited truck parking, and physical constraints at major hubs impact efficiency, but solutions such as staging areas, expanded parking, and shifting more freight to rail for long-haul movement are helping.
  • Workforce development is a priority
With nearly half of Georgia’s truck drivers over the age of 55 and a large portion of the logistics workforce nearing retirement, attracting and training the next generation, and equipping them with new technology skills is essential.
  • Georgia’s collaborative approach is a competitive advantage
Strong public-private partnerships continue to set Georgia apart. Panelists noted other states are trying to replicate this model, which has been honed over decades by forward-thinking leaders and collaboration across transportation modes.

One big takeaway: Georgia’s logistics network is quickly evolving quickly toward a more connected, data-driven system, as one panelist described it, “Interstate 2.0.” Businesses of all sizes can capitalize on that momentum.

“If you’re in the supply chain industry, Georgia is a place of immense opportunity,” – Seth Millican, President and CEO, Georgia Motor Trucking Association

What this means for businesses
While much of the discussion focused on Georgia’s statewide network, similar takeaways can apply to small and medium-sized businesses. Factors like how well companies use data, how they work with partners, and how they plan for uncertainties and disruption can determine success. Improvements like what’s working at the state level, including coordinating more closely with carriers or shifting delivery times to avoid congestion, can mean better reliability and cost savings.
