The Next Aerospace Frontiers: UAS, Space & Hypersonics in Georgia

The aerospace industry is on a trajectory toward ground-breaking innovations in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and supersonic flight systems. It needs people who can discover new approaches to solutions, and Georgia is leading the way in this regard.

UAVs are a key focus in today’s aerospace industry. Drones — either autonomous or remotely piloted — are potentially able to complete operations more safely and efficiently than a human pilot can. The commercial UAV market is expected to reach $2.2 billion in Georgia by 2025, driven by the state’s defense, personal safety, agriculture and booming film industries. Additionally, Atlanta-based startup, Hermeus is paving the way when it comes to the reintroduction of supersonic flight to commercial travel. Partnering with NASA and the U.S. Air Force, this company plans to manufacture a Mach 5 commercial aircraft by 2029. In the way of environmental impact, Georgia Tech is partnered with NASA and the FAA in research on alternative aviation fuels that seek to reduce CO2, NOx and particulate emissions.
