Sara Gershon

General Counsel

Sara Gershon is General Counsel of the Georgia Department of Economic Development. In this role, she oversees all legal matters for the Department, including advising on general legal and business matters, representing the State in drafting and negotiating contracts with companies locating or expanding in Georgia, drafting and interpreting legislation and regulations, overseeing litigation, managing the Department’s intellectual property, providing training on legal issues, and responding to Open Records Requests. 

Sara joined the Department in 2020, serving as Associate Counsel, and later Deputy General Counsel. In her tenure with the Department, Ms. Gershon has worked on closing several of the largest economic development projects in state history, supported Department teams in their record-breaking pursuits, and provided leadership for a number of internal and external Department initiatives around employee engagement and workforce.  

Prior to joining the Department, Sara served as a Staff Attorney for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Atlanta. Sara is a passionate writer, earning awards and publication for her writing on topics including sports business and sports law. Sara earned her J.D. along with an M.S. in Sport Management and Policy as a dual degree student at the University of Georgia, and her B.A. in English-Creative Writing with a minor in Italian from the City College of New York. Ms. Gershon resides in Mableton with her rescue poodle, Nino.
