About South Georgia
This 17 county region is best known for its strength in the agriculture, food processing and manufacturing industries. Major employers in Region 9 include Chicken of the Sea, Trane Inc. and Claxton Poultry Farms. Three of the largest crops native to the area are pecans, cotton and Vidalia onions.
Laurens County boasts one of the highest concentrations of doctors (100+) and allied health students in Georgia, spearheaded by Fairview Park Hospital and the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center. The region is well-known for its historical antebellum homes and is also home to Southeastern Technical College, which has campuses in both Swainsboro and Vidalia.
