Do I need a permit to shoot in Georgia?

The Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office does not issue filming permits. In general, permits are not required for shooting on private property (beyond the owner's permission) unless public property is impacted. Some municipalities and state and federal agencies may require permits to shoot at certain locations within their jurisdiction. Permitting for streets, buildings and parks in the City of Atlanta is done through the Mayor's Office of Entertainment. You can also contact our county Camera Ready Liaisons or call the appropriate municipality or agency to inquire about rules, restrictions, and permitting for your desired location. I need to double ____________ (fill in the blank). Can I find this in Georgia?

With the exception of expansive deserts or a blustery snowfield, Georgia can stand in for most anywhere. Domestically we've stood in for New York City, Las Vegas, Chicago, Iowa, Los Angeles, New Orleans, San Francisco and Florida to name a few. We've also stood in for international cities, historical and futuristic societies, and even other planets! Our location liaisons are familiar with every corner of the biggest state east of the Mississippi River.

Is there anywhere in Georgia that I can shoot a summer/spring shot with greenery in January?

Absolutely. Savannah and much of Coastal Georgia has live oaks, magnolias, azaleas and other foliage that remains green all year round.

I need rural locations for my shoot. Can I still base out of Atlanta without driving too far?

Yes. Rural locations are plentiful within an hour's drive in any direction from downtown. And if you need mountain scenery, the Appalachian foothills are a little over an hour away.

I am looking for uniquely ‘southern’ locations. Does Georgia have these?

You will find numerous rural locations, charming small towns, and historic Southern homes within an hour's drive from downtown Atlanta, as well as throughout the state. Savannah is a beautiful and historic, coastal city with a unique look all its own. Macon, Columbus and Augusta, along with hundreds of other cities and towns throughout Georgia, offer unique and realistic looks that will create a real sense of place and time.

Are there other film offices in Georgia that can help my production?

Our office has film liaisons in all 159 counties in Georgia through the Camera Ready program. These trained liaisons will help you on the local level with arranging shoots, finding locations and whatever local assistance you may need. Currently the only 'official' film commission outside of the state office is the Savannah Film Office.

Is the Savannah Area Film Office part of the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office?

No, the Savannah Area Film Office operates under the auspices of the City of Savannah. We consider them our partner, though, in that we share information and assist each other when necessary.

Does your office have stock footage (B-Roll) of Georgia and Atlanta?

UPDATE: As of April 2024, for all properties, the contact information provided by the property submitter will be publicly displayed in the Georgia Film Locations Database and its mirror site, LocationsHub. Filmmakers will now contact property owners directly if interested. Street addresses for commercial properties will continue to be displayed, but residential addresses will not. By submitting your property, you consent to having your contact information visible in the database (though the location can be removed at any time).

If you would like your Georgia home, business, or property considered for filming, please upload digital photos via the photo submission form at the bottom of the page. We will review your photos and, if approved, your property will be added to our online locations database, which is publicly viewable on our website: GA Reel Scout.

Georgia Film Location Submission Guidelines

Submitted locations will not be accepted if they do not meet the guidelines below:

For private residences, you must be the actual owner of the property to submit to our database. Submissions from real estate agents, location service companies, property management companies, etc. will not be approved.
This database is for shooting locations only. If you wish to market your property for lodging, please register as a SUPPORT SERVICE in the Georgia Production Directory and list your property under PRIVATE ACCOMMODATIONS. There is no fee to register. You must provide links to VRBO or similar where additional photos of the property can be seen. The Production Directory does not serve as a photo library.
Provide a good photo overview of your property: Exterior, interior, from the street. Interior shots must be included, or a note included in the "usage restriction" field stating interior filming is not allowed.
Concentrate on unique features and rooms of the property (not the toilet, pantry, etc.).
Include photos of the assets in your description (pool, barn, etc.).
Shoot WIDE and from multiple angles.
Professional photos are not required, but dark, old, or poorly focused photos will not be accepted, nor will those that are too small or low-resolution.
Make sure images are properly rotated before submission.
Do not include photos taken in inclement weather (snow, fog, rain, etc.).
Staged photos highlighting people, pets or objects are not accepted.
Do not submit video clips, screen captures, or brochures.
Properties currently for sale will not be accepted.
If drastically remodeling, please wait until work is complete before submitting photos.
Describe your property: Write a descriptive title ("1910 Victorian Home") and add detail to the listing — square footage, architectural style, year built, number of bedrooms, special features.
10–20 photos are ideal; beyond 20 is generally too many. We reserve the right to select the best group among the submitted photos and delete those which are redundant or of poor quality.

Required Photo Sizes

Low-resolution (small file size) photos will not be accepted.

150 dpi or higher
Recommended file size between 1MB – 3 MB (maximum file size: 10MB)
JPEG compression = 12 good quality
1680 X 1054 resolution (or higher) for large size web browsing
Physical photo size: 8.5″ X 11″
If particular types of film/TV content or budget levels are not of interest, please note in the "usage restriction" field.
If you want to list the property for lodging, please visit our Reel-Crew Production Directory. There, you can submit the property under SUPPORT SERVICES – PRIVATE ACCOMMODATIONS and link to a website where photos of the property can be seen. You cannot load photos into the Production Directory.

Once you have gathered your photos, please submit them using our Photo Submission Form.

What Happens Next (FAQs)?

How will I know my location has been received?

You will receive an automated confirmation e-mail. Locations may take time for staff review due to heavy submission volume. If you do not see your location listed, it is either in the queue or has not been approved.

How long until I hear from a production company?

It depends on what is currently shooting and their location needs. A production company representative will contact you directly if and when the property is of interest. Please do not submit locations more than once.

How much should I charge someone to shoot on my property?

Our office does not advise on location fees, which vary from project to project. In most cases, the production will make a specific offer based on budget and shooting requirements. You should never give your bank account information to someone who wants to wire you funds.

How is liability insurance handled?

Most film/TV productions carry insurance policies that indemnify you. You should confirm that your location agreement covers this.

How can I update my listing with new photos?

Property owners are not able to edit their listings once submitted. Updated photos typically aren't needed if proper coverage was initially submitted. If the property has been drastically altered or you want to add a large number of new photos, you should submit a new listing.
